Objective: To aim for the correlation of 19- items Wearing Off Questionnaire (WOQ-19) positive items and MDS-UPDRS IV.
Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) has a well known treatment with dopaminergic therapy. At the beginning it works well, however as disease progresses some manifestation appears, as wearing-off (WO). WO questionnaires are useful to screen this condition. It could quantify it. Some reports sum of individual items increases with disease duration. Also, quality of health is related to it (1). Moreover, specificity is higher with positive items, with ceiling effect (2). Recently, safinamide, which is used to treat off periods, lowers WOQ-19 (3).
Method: One hundred fifty six PD patients were tested for correlation in WOQ number of positive items and MDS-UPDRS IV. Inclusion criteria: Participants were included if they had a diagnosis of PD by UK Brain Bank criteria and they were on dopaminergic therapy. Participants and/or caregivers had to be able to fill out the WOQ-19. The study took place in 2015 to 2017.
Results: One hundred fifty six PD patients participated. Age was 64.7 (±10.2) years, 49% were female, and disease duration was 12.4 (±5.3) years. All individuals were using levodopa therapy. Total MDS-UPDRS was 78.22 (±35.3) and part IV was 6.64 (±4.12). The median sum of items was 5 (3-8) for the entire questionnaire, 4 (2-6) for motor questions and 1 (0-2) for non-motor ones. Spearman’s correlation was r= 0.471 (p<0.01) .
Conclusion: In this cross-sectional study we show a moderate correlation on WOQ19 number of positive items and MDS-UPDRS IV.
