Session Title: Parkinson's disease: Genetics
Session Time: 12:30pm-2:00pm
Location: Exhibit Hall located in Hall B, Level 2
Objective: We evaluated an association between PD and VDR polymorphisms including BsmI, FokI, ApaI, and TaqI and we also investigated the relationship between VDR polymorphisms and vitamin D levels.
Background: Recently, the effect of genetic variants in the VDR gene on PD has gained interest. However, the precise relationship between VDR polymorphisms and PD remains to be unclear. In Korea, one study reported an association between the VDR gene polymorphisms and PD; however, this study was conducted based on a small sample size, and only Bsml locus was evaluated. Therefore, further investigations about the relationship between VDR polymorphisms and PD are necessary in Korean population.
Methods: A total 300 subjects were included in this study. 146 PD patients were diagnosed by eligible criteria and age matched 154 healthy control subjects were also enrolled. We used TaqMan genotyping assay for identifying four SNPs of the VDR gene including BsmI, FokI, ApaI, and TaqI (rs731236, rs2228570, rs7976091, and rs731236).
Results: There was no significant association between the risk of PD and genetic polymorphism in four loci in Korean population. We also did not find any significant correlation between serum vitamin D level and 4 genetic variations of the VDR gene.
Conclusions: Our data suggest that there is no correlation between PD and VDR polymorphisms including BsmI, FokI, ApaI, and TaqI in Korean population. Further investigations of VDR and its relationship with PD are required to identify the role of vitamin D in PD pathogenesis.
