Session Title: Parkinson's disease: Non-motor symptoms
Session Time: 12:30pm-2:00pm
Location: Exhibit Hall located in Hall B, Level 2
Objective: The study aims to evaluate psychometric properties of Czech version of Parkinson Anxiety Scale (PAS), new scale developed in 2014 to measure anxiety specifically in Parkinson´s disease.
Background: Anxiety disturbances remains under-recognized non-motor symptom of PD, moreover the research is limited by lack of anxiety rating scales validated for Parkinsonian population. Original version of PAS offers better psychometric properties than existing anxiety scale. Appropriate validation study and language adaptation is necessary for further research and clinical practice in Czech Republic.
Methods: Patients with idiopathic PD (40) underwent a standardized assessment including a structured interview for presence of DSM-defined depressive and anxiety disorders (M.I.N.I; mini international neuropsychiatric inventory; NPI, version 5.0.0), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), PAS and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Demographic and disease related variables (UPDRS, Hoehn & Yahr, PD duration and L-Dopa medication) were registered, assessment of cognitive functions was done with MMSE a Mattis Dementia Rating Scale.
Results: Eleven patients (27%) suffered from an anxiety disorder according to NPI, however additional 22% of patients had symptoms of anxiety in the absence of anxiety disorder diagnosis with NPI. Less than 0.01% missing data shows good acceptability, internal consistency coefficient was very satisfying for full scale (0.89) as well as for three subscales (0.87; 0.75 and 0.66). The concurrent validity was also supported by significant correlation with HARS (0.89) and BAI (0.86). However, test-retest reliability did not met expected criteria (0.68).
Conclusions: Despite the limited sample size, our data demonstrate that PAS proved to be reliable and valid anxiety measure in the PD and will stimulate further research of anxiety in PD.
