THE THERAPEUTIC EFFECT OF Bacopa monnieri (WATERHYSSOP) IN TREATING PARKINSON’S DISEASE

N. Nizam, M. Ramli (Shah Alam, Malaysia)

Meeting: MDS Virtual Congress 2021

Abstract Number: 614

Keywords: Parkinson’s

Category: Parkinsonism, Others

Objective: To determine the lethal concentration (LC50) of Bacopa monnieri aqueous extraction toward zebrafish.
To analyse the behavioural study of zebrafish that has been exposed to rotenone as well as after treatment.
To study the histological changes of prolonged exposure with rotenone as well as after treatment.

Background: Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disease that affect the dopamine system in the brain which is responsible for the motor control of the body. Presently, drugs that is commercially available have unwanted side effects. Bacopa monnieri is known to have many positive effects such as strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects, nonetheless, there is insufficient details regarding the effects toward this disease. Zebrafish is a reliable model to study neurological disease with the induction of rotenone. Rotenone cause effects toward zebrafish identical to Parkinson’s disease. Thus, the aim of this study is to study the effects of Bacopa monnieri toward rotenone induced zebrafish.

Method: 50 adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) were separated into three groups. Group 1: Normal group (n=10), Group 2: Negative group (n=20), Group 3: Experimental group (n=20). The adult zebrafish were exposed to 5 µg/L rotenone for 28 days following with the treatment for 28 days using Bacopa monnieri with the concentration of 0.2348 mg/L.

Results: Lethal concentration (LC50) has been observed in 0.2348 mg/L treatment. Behaviour finding indicate that the adult zebrafish shows anxious response by measuring the time spent by the fish at the lower region of the tank. The fish also display slow swimming pattern after induced with rotenone, but it showed significant increased after the treatment. The increased swimming activity might be due to the antioxidant and therapeutic effects of Bacopa monnieri that significantly changed the behaviour of zebrafish.

Conclusion: In conclusion, we found that Bacopa monnieri extract exhibits strong potential in treating Parkinson’s disease-induced zebrafish.
