Category: Parkinson's Disease: Non-Motor Symptoms
Objective: The aim was to determine correlation and difference according to severity of SD with motor and nonmotor symptoms, age, gender and levodopa equivalent daily dose (LEDD) in PD patients.
Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) presents with many motor and nonmotor symptoms. Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is reported in 18.6%-59% of PD patients. However, the etiology of SD in these patients remains unknown.
Method: Patients were evaluated for motor symptoms using Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale part III (UPDRS III) and surveyed for nonmotor symptoms using Parkinson’s Disease Sleep Scale (PDSS), Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson’s Disease-Autonomic Dysfunction (SCOPA-AUT) and Non Motor Scale Questionnaire (NMSQ). LEDD was calculated and demographic data on age, gender and disease duration. A dermatologist evaluated patient skin for SD using the Seborrhea Area and Severity Index (SASI).
Results: Sixty-one PD patients were evaluated. SD was present in 36.1% of PD patients. SD was found to correlate positively with the severity of motor symptoms and age. Patients with moderate to severe motor symptoms had more severe SD symptoms and the risk to develop SD was 1.8 higher in those with moderate to severe symptoms versus those with mild symptoms. There was no correlation between SD and autonomic dysfunction, sleep disturbances or other nonmotor symptoms, neither gender difference.
Conclusion: Patients with moderate to severe motor symptoms had more severe SD symptoms and the risk to develop SD was 1.8 higher versus those with mild symptoms.
