Session Title: Quality Of Life/Caregiver Burden in Movement Disorders
Session Time: 1:45pm-3:15pm
Location: Exhibit Hall C
Objective: To examine the secular change of quality of life (QOL) in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). To clarify the correlated factor with QOL in PD.
Background: PD is a chronic disease. During the prolonged course of PD, to improve or keep good QOL is important to patients.
Methods: Subjects were 70 patients with PD (male: female= 28:42, mean age 65.2 years old, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE)>21), who had been examined cognitive function, frontal lobe function, activity of daily living (ADL), motor function, depression and QOL using MMSE, Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) and 39 item Parkinson Disease Questionnaire (PDQ39). Based on the PDQ39 score measured at a 4-year follow-up, we divided subjects into the improved QOL group and the worsened QOL group. We investigated the secular change of above-referenced test battery in each group.
Results: 28 patients showed improvement in PDQ39 score and 41 patients became worse. There were no significant differences in age, duration, and every score of the test battery at first time except for PDQ39 between two groups. The first PDQ39 total score was higher in the improved group than the worsened group (p=.008). At second time, PDQ39 total and UPDRS partⅡ scores were lower in the improved group than the worsened group (p<.05). During the 4 year period, however, UPDRS total and UPDRS partⅢ scores of both groups got worse (p<.05), in the deteriorated group UPDRS partⅡ, FAB and SDS scores got worse (p<.01).
Conclusions: To maintain ADL and frontal lobe function and to prevent depressive symptom from worsening relate to improvement of QOL.
