Objective: The objective of this study is to identify the quality of life in patients with Parkinson’s Disease
Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative in central nervous system, characterized by tremor, rigidity, akynesia, and postural instability. PD is affected in not only physical but also psychological. As a chronic disease, PD has a huge impact to the quality of life of the patients.
Method: This study was a cross sectional study on 31 PD patients at Bethesda Hospital, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Inclusion criteria i.e.: (i) age ≥ 50 years, (ii) male or female, (iii) outpatients at Bethesda Hospital, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, (iv) diagnosed with PD. Subjects will be excluded if they refused to involve in this study. Data obtained include: age, gender, comorbidity, type of medication, duration of disease. Each subject was asked to fill out the SF-8 questionnaire. There were 2 components in SF-8 questionnaire: physical component (PCS) and mental component (MCS).
Results: The subjects dominated by female (54.8%) with mean age 68.39 ± 7.9 years. About 87.1% of the subjects have a comorbidity. The most common comorbidity was cerebrovascular accident (74.2%), followed by hypertension (35.5%) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (25.8%). The most common medication was a combination of L-dopa and non L-dopa. (54.8%). The highest score of PCS was 65 and the lowest was 24. The mean score of PCS was 40.36 ± 9.689. The maximum score of MCS was 66 and the minimum score was 22. The mean score of MCS was 52.01 ± 11.641.
Conclusion: Physical and mental problems are common among PD patients. This study shows patients with PD have a better mental status than physical status.
