THE EFFECT OF VITAMIN D IN PARKINSON’S DISEASE

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the role of vitamin D deficiency (VDD) as an etiopathological factor in Parkinson’s disease (PD).

Background: Vitamin D has variable roles in cellproliferation,differentiation,neurotransmission and neuroplasticity in the neurological system and has a neuroprotective effect. The present study investigates the correlation between VDD and PD, the second most common neurodegenerative disorder.

Method: In the study, plasma vitamin D levels were measured in patients with idiopathic PD with/without dementia (D) and compared with healthy individuals without any metabolic/degenerative disease.

Results: In our study, serum vitamin D levels were measured in 40 (23M,17F, mean age: 68.53± 12.21) patients with PD without D, and 15 (11M,4F,mean age: 76.67±4.40) patients with PD with D and they were compared with 30 (11M,19F, mean age:71.13±8.75) healthy controls. The vitamin D values were found to be 21.46±15.95 in the control group,6.55±6.45 in patients with PD without D and 13.85±4.58 in patients with PD with D. Vitamin D level was found to be significantly lower (p< 0.005) in all patient groups studied than in the control group. Vitamin D was found to be lower in the group with D among patients with PD (p:0.012).

Conclusion: It has been reported that vitamin D regulates the development and function of dopamine neurons by regulating the glial derived neurotropic factor (GDNF) in the brain. Therefore, it has been suggested that in PD with low dopamine levels, VDD is more common than normal individuals and that VDD may have a role in the development of the disease. It has been stated that people with low plasma vitamin D levels have four times more impairment in cognitive functions than those with normal levels. As a result of our study; VDD should also be monitored in the follow-up and treatment of cognitive impairment in patients with PD.
