Objective: this study aiming to show if there’s an effect for sleep bruxism on the quality of sleeping.
Background: Sleep bruxism is a movement disorder in the form of movement arousal that characterized by clenching and/ or grinding of the teeth during sleeping that it’s opposite to the normal mastication which is an awake, automatic and voluntary movement initiate and stop with the feeding process[1].Sleep bruxism associated with sleep fragmentation in the form of increase in the frequency of awaking, micro arousals of unconscious and transit 3 to 10 seconds of brain electroencephalogram fast-wave activity that sometimes occurs with respiratory apnea [2,3]. This high frequency of sleep fragmentation affects the daytime performance.
Method: 20 adult subjects of both genders referred from a dentist, there ages ranged from 20-25 years enrolled to this study who have been diagnosed with bruxism prior to the study. all the subjects’ sleep quality has been evaluated using the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) [4].
Results: The statistical analysis showed that there’s an effect for the sleep bruxism on the sleeping quality as according to the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) the global score of 5 or more indicate that there’s poor sleep quality the higher the score the worse the quality as the maximum, median and minimum scores of the 20 patients was (13,7,5) respectively.
Conclusion: By confirming that there’s an effect of sleep bruxism and sleeping quality this could be a differential diagnosis for the sleeping disorders in future studies.
