Objective: To investigate the effect of anti- Parkinson’s disease (anti-PD granules) and probiotics on gastrointestinal motility in the mouse model of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydropyridine( MPTP )-induced PD.
Background: There has been a dearth of literature on anti-PD granules, which fall under TCM to be administered to improve intestinal motility and constipation here in China.
Method: A total of 100 SPF C57BL/6 mice, male, healthy and aged 6 weeks, constituted an animal model, where 20 were used as blank control group (group A) and others received MPTP intraperitoneal injections to be MPTP-induced control group (B1), probiotics intervention group (B2), anti-PD granules intervention group (B3) and probiotics+anti-PD granules intervention group (B4), respectively. The gastrointestinal dynamics were detected before modeling, and 15 days, 1, 2, 3 & 4 months later, respectively. At each interval were observed the fecal water content, number of defecation particles per time unit, first black stool discharge time and small intestinal transport rate.
Results: A gradual improvement was observed in the fecal water content, number of defecation particles per time unit, first black stool discharge time and small intestinal transport rate in each group except group A, group B4 better improved than group B3, group B3 than group B2, and group B2 than group B1, respectively (P<0.01).
Conclusion: Anti-PD granules and probiotics improved the gastrointestinal motility in the mouse model of MPTP-inducted PD by relieving constipation, and their combined use showed better efficacy.
