Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the sexual disorder in patients that have Parkinson’s disease at Fann University Hospital in Dakar, Senegal.
Background: In several studies done worldwide about Parkinson’s disease, sexual dysfunction has been found. The prevalence of these sexual disorders remains unknown in our context and virtually unexplored.
Method: We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study for six months, running from January 2019 to June 2019 at the Neurological Clinic of the Fann Hospital in Dakar, Senegal. After obtained consent forms from the patients with Parkinson’s disease at the clinic, we have submitted them a questionnaire regarding the socio-demographics and data related to sexual disorders.
Results: 32 patients that have Parkinson’s disease were include, the mean age was 64.03 ± 10.43 with ages ranging from 45 to 92 years old 65.6% were male. 53.1%, were married in monogamy or polygamy relationships, 25% widowed and the rest were either divorced or single. 43.8% were in stage 3 and 37.5% in stage 2 of the Hoen and Yahr classification. 43.8% of patients that have Parkinson’s disease had a sexual disorder in particular: among men 61.9% had an erection disorder and 19% had premature ejaculation. Only 9.1% of women reported a sexual disorder. The sexual desire was reduced in 3.2% of participants.
Conclusion: Sexual disorders are more frequent in men than in women who have Parkinson’s disease at the Fann University Hospital, in Dakar, Senegal. And erection disorder are the most found sexual disorder.
