Session Title: Clinical Trials and Therapy in Movement Disorders
Session Time: 1:45pm-3:15pm
Location: Hall 3FG
Objective: We evaluated the relationship between non-motor symptoms and clinical signs in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD).
Background: Patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) manifest not only motor symptoms but also a variety of non-motor symptoms. Non-motor symptoms include various symptoms such as sleep disorders, autonomic impairments, and mood disturbances, affecting the quality of life.
Methods: Fifty-two patients with PD were included in this study (21 men/31 women; age, 68.8±9.9 years; Hoehn and Yahr stage, 2.6±1.1). Non-motor symptoms were evaluated by Non-Motor Symptom assessment scale for PD (NMSS). Patients were assessed with MDS-UPDRS III and IV, PD sleep evaluation scale – 2 (PDSS-2), Scales for Outcomes in PD Autonomic (SCOPA-AUT), Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) and Beck depression inventory-II (BDI-II). Dopamine transporter (DAT) scan, MIBG myocardial scintigraphy and card type olfactory identification test (Open Essence (OE, Wako)) were performed.
Results: The NMSS total score was 35.7±38.6. The NMSS total score did not correlate with disease duration, ESS, OE score or the results of DAT scan or MIBG myocardial scintigraphy. However, the NMSS total score positively correlated with age and HY stage. Particularly, we observed the significant positive correlation with MDS-UPDRS III, PDSS-2, SCOPA-AUT, and BDI-II scores.
Conclusions: Our study results suggest the association between non-motor symptoms and motor dysfunction, sleep disturbances, autonomic symptoms and depressive symptoms in PD.
