Objective: Use administrative claims data to investigate the relative occurrence of device-related complications after new DBS implantation in US patients with movement disorders.
Background: Rate of device related complications reported in more recent studies of DBS may be lower than that in early pivotal studies of DBS. Further, complication rates in the real world may also differ from those reported in studies.
Method: Medicare fee for service claims were used to identify patients receiving DBS system implant between Oct 2015-2019. ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes were used to identify reason for implant and to assess comorbidities. Patients were excluded if they had less than 1 year of enrollment prior to implant and if they had evidence of prior DBS implant. Device-related complication rates were compared using the Andersen-Gill modification to Cox-proportional hazard model by year of implant.
Results: Results are pending and will follow from the reported methods. The analysis will report on acute (90 day) and chronic (≥1 year) device-related complications, including infection, lead/extension fracture, lead misplacement, and intracranial bleeding, was well as corresponding interventions of lead or IPG revision, replacement, or explant.
Conclusion: With advancements in technology and technique, complication rates after DBS implant may have changed, however are not well quantified. This new analytical approach uses claims data of a large patient cohort in the US to assess the safety profile of DBS technology in recent years.
