Session Title: Rating Scales
Session Time: 1:15pm-2:45pm
Location: Hall 3FG
Objective: To investigate the validity and reliability of the Freezing of Gait Questionnaire (FOG-Q) in Turkish Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients.
Background: Freezing of gait is a disabling PD symptom, because of its relation with increased risk of falls, fractures and negative impact on health-related quality of life. An objective evaluation of the symptom using specific scales such as a FOG-Q is a necessity in PD patients with freezing of gait.
Methods: The FOG-Q Turkish translation was accomplished using forward-backward-translation. Patients were assessed with the FOG-Q, Hoehn&Yahr (H&Y) -on and -off, Unified PD Rating Scale (UPDRS) part II (activities of daily living) -on and -off, and III (motor symptoms), 39-item Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) – Mobility, Falls-Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I), Timed Up-and-Go Test (TUGT), and 10-Meter Walk Test (10-MWT). The FOG-Q comprises six items with five response categories (scored from 0 to 4) that are summed into a total score (range 0–24). The higher score was indicate more severe FOG.
Results: 82 patients (47 males, 57.3%) participated in the study. No data was missing for the FOG-Q. No ceiling effect was observed on the FOG-Q total score, but floor effect was 2%. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.95, corrected item-to-total correlations ranged from 0.82 to 0.90. The total score of the FOG-Q was significantly correlated with H&Y-on (Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient [SCC] 0.66), H&Y-off (SCC 0.71), UPDRS part II-on (SCC 0.67), UPDRS part II-off (SCC 0.79), UPDRS part III (SCC 0.50), PDQ-39 – Mobility (SCC 0.73), FES-I (SCC 0.70), TUGT (SCC 0.49) and 10-MWT (SCC 0.49).
Conclusions: The FOG-Q is a valid and reliable tool to assess FOG in Turkish native speaking PD patients. Our preliminary results suggest that Turkish FOG-Q could be used in clinical research to assess and evaluate freezing.
