Objective: This study aimed to screen the prevalence of possible sarcopenia and its association with physical activity level in a sample of PD patients.
Background: Elderly patients with chronic diseases are at higher risk of having sarcopenia. Screening for sarcopenia in the Parkinson’s disease (PD) population is an emerging concept in research and clinical practice.
Method: We conducted an observational, cross-sectional study, that included patients with idiopathic PD. Possible sarcopenia was diagnosed by applying the SARC-F questionnaire and the presence of low muscle strength. Physical activity was assessed using the Human Activity Profile questionnaire.
Results: Among 135 patients with PD (mean± standard deviation of age: 70.21 ± 8.33 years; 47% women), 38% man and 39,1% women had possible sarcopenia. Significant differences (p<0.05) were observed in the SARC-F questionnaire between the patients according stage disease (modified Hoehn and Yahr- HYR) scale. In univariable analysis, possible sarcopenia was significantly associated with physical activity level.
Conclusion: The possible sarcopenia was observed in approximately one third of the patients evaluated. Screening for the risk of sarcopenia should be encouraged in clinical practice, using rapidly applicable and low-cost tools. Physical activity should be recommended in all stages of PD as preventive and therapeutic interventions.
