Category: Parkinson's Disease: Non-Motor Symptoms
Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the patients with Parkinson’s disease have frequently pincer nail deformity (PND).
Background: In our routine clinical practice, we sometime have experience that the patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) have PND. It is reported that PND is associated with various factors including gastrointestinal malignancies, renal failure, Kawasaki disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, long-term beta-blockers use and unfitting shoes. However, it is not unclear whether the patients with PD frequently have PND.
Method: We studied PD patients (n=19, median age 75 years, female 58%) and non-PD patients (n=33, median age 55 years, female 48%) who attended or were admitted to our hospital. We investigated the presence of PND and pain caused by PND.
Results: PD patients had more frequently PND than non-PD patients (11/19 (58%) vs. 5/33 (15%), p=0.002). PND of all patients was observed in their feet. Of 16 patients with PND, 7 patients (5 PD patients and 2 non-PD patients) had pain caused PND. Among the PD patients, there was no significant difference of Hoehn and Yahr scale between PD patients with and without PND. However, PD patients with PND had longer PD duration than those without PND (median PD duration: 46 months vs. 12 months, p = 0.031).
Conclusion: More than one in two patients with PD might have PND, which frequency should be high compared to non-PD patients. In particular, PD patients with longer PD duration might have PND.
