Objective: To objectively assess the bradykinesia of upper extremity using the Objective Movement Disorder Measurement (OMDM)-Dexterity test
Background: Bradykinesia is one of the clinical hallmarks of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and atypical Parkinsonian syndromes. Usually, bradykinesia of upper extremity is tested using finger tapping as part of the motor section of the UPDRS, but judgment of severity is dependent on clinicians’ experience. So, some methods for objective measurement of bradykinesia have been developed. We tried to objectively assess the bradykinesia of upper extremity using the Objective Movement Disorder Measurement (OMDM)-Dexterity test.
Methods: The OMDM-Dexterity test is a computer keyboard-tapping test. Users alternately tap two keys as fast and accurately as possible with two fingers (between ‘N’ and ‘M’) or one finger (between ‘P’ and ‘Q’). The kinetic score was collected as correctly taped number per seconds.
The test was undertaken in 12 patients with parkinsonism and 7 age-matched controls.
The scores were compared between groups using the paired t-test. Association between UPDRS motor score and the kinetic score of the OMDM-Dexterity test was estimated using Sperman’s rank correlation coefficient (P= 0.05).
Results: Sex ratio, age, and educated years were not significantly different between patients and control group. In two fingers test, mean kinetic score of patient group was lower than control group, but was not significant. In one finger test, mean kinetic score of patient group was significantly lower. In patient group, mean kinetic score of two finger test and one finger test correlated significantly with UPDRS total motor scores (r=-0.56 and r=-0.70, respectively).
Conclusions: The OMDM-Dexterity test is a convenient test of upper limb motor function that can be used in the outpatient clinic, at home and in clinical trials.
