Session Title: Parkinson's Disease: Pathophysiology
Session Time: 1:15pm-2:45pm
Location: Hall 3FG
Objective: We conducted a pilot study to determine the association between the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), he lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR), the levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), white blood count (WBC) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) in patients with different stages of Parkinson’s Disease compared to healthy control group.
Background: It has been hypothesized that chronic inflammation may play role in the development and progression of Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease (IPD). However, the relationship between new markers of inflammation, including NLR, LMR and IPD was not studied.
Methods: Participants included 32 patients (13 women, 19 men) with IPD (median age, 68.5 years) and C – healthy control group (median age, 67 years). We divided IPD in two subgroups (I- with early stage without history of motor fluctuations and II – late stage with motor complications like fluctuations or dyskinesias). WBC, hsCRP, ESR, NLR and LMR were determined and calculated from peripheral blood taken on usual visit in the outpatient clinic.
Results: We found significant differences in NLR between II and control group (p > 0.05). Additionally, we observed but we did not show significant differences between patients from studied groups and healthy subjects in all other measured parameters (p > 0.05). These data are summarized in Table 1 (median, interquartile range) [table1]. We did not find any significant differences in all below parameters in group <2.5 and ≥ 2.5 stages of Hoehn-Yahr Scale.
Conclusions: The results of our pilot study suggested association between NLR and stage of IPD. NLR may stay a prognostic marker of IPD progression and appearance of motor complications.
