Objective: The study aims to evaluate sleep quality among male and female Hispanic PD patients using the Parkinson’s Disease Sleep Scale (PDSS)
Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is acknowledged for its multifaceted impact on various facets of patients’ lives, encompassing sleep quality. The discernment of potential gender-based disparities in sleep disturbances among individuals with PD holds the promise of offering invaluable insights for the development of precisely tailored interventions.
Method: A cross-sectional study was undertaken, encompassing 66 Hispanic patients diagnosed with PD, each of whom granted informed consent. The assessment of sleep quality was conducted using the PDSS. To identify potential variations in sleep quality between genders, a statistical analysis employed a T-test for mean score comparison.
Results: The study participants, constituting 62% men (41) and 38% women (25), demonstrated mean ages of 69±8 and 65±9, respectively. The PDSS-2 mean score for females was 18.44 and for males, 19.44, suggesting mild to moderate sleep-related issues in both genders. Additionally, 19.7% of participants exhibited PDSS scores exceeding 30, with consistent prevalence observed in both genders (females: 20%, males: 19.6%). The T-test revealed a t-value of -0.406 (df=56, p: 0.343) and failed to attain statistical significance.
Conclusion: Within the scope of this investigation, no statistically significant gender-related disparities in sleep quality were discerned among the studied cohort. Although the present study did not yield conclusive evidence, it underscores the necessity for future investigations with expanded sample sizes to enhance statistical robustness. These outcomes, despite their preliminary nature, augment the existing knowledge base regarding the intricate dimensions of PD.
