Session Title: Dystonia
Session Time: 12:00pm-1:30pm
Location: Exhibit Hall located in Hall B, Level 2
Objective: To report the epidemiological and clinical profile of patients with essential bleaphrospasm from the outpatient clinic of Movement Disorders of the Hospital de Clínicas – Universidade Federal do Paraná, as well as their response to standard treatment with BTA over a period of 11 years.
Background: Essential blepharospasm consists of involuntary multiple, repetitive contractions of the eyelids with progressive impairment that can ultimately lead to visual impairment. BTA injections of the affected muscles is the standard treatment, despite the need for repetitive injections due to its temporary effect.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 80 patients with blepharospasm from the outpatient clinic of Movement Disorders of the Neurology Service of Hospital de Clínicas – UFPR who were treated with BTA over a period of 11 years.
Results: 68 patients (85%) were female, mean age of onset was 57.3 y/a, with the majority of patients with isolated blepharospasm, with no other concomitant movement disorder. Mean administered dose at the first visit was 57.52 IU, whereas on the last visit it was 127.25 IU. Mean latency from admnistration to start of clinical effect was of 6 days, while the men duration of effect was 03 months. Side-effects were uncommon, with temporary ptosis reported as the most common side-effect.
Conclusions: Clinical and epidemiological profiles and therapeutic response of our sample of essential blepharospasm was similar to those reported from other sites. Standard treatment with BTA lead to a significant reduction involuntary spasms.
