Session Time: 1:15pm-2:45pm
Location: Exhibit Hall C
Objective: To investigate the effect of object size and obstacle on reach-to-grasp (RTG) actions in individuals Parkinson’s disease (PD).
Background: Previous studies reported impairments of RTG kinematics and coordination in PDs during RTG to different sized objects in non- obstacle avoidance situation. Although obstacle avoidance task could perturb the planning for RTG in non-disabled individuals, it is still questionable if the obstacle had any effects on RTG performance of PD individuals. Thus, current study aimed to compare the RTG performance in PDs between 4 conditions (small+obstacle, small+non-obstacle, large+obstacle, small+non-obstacle).
Methods: Eight PDs were evaluated in the kinematics and coordination during RTG to small (1.2 cm in diameter) and large sized (8 cm in diameter) objects with and without avoiding the obstacle. They were asked to perform 32 trials (8 trials/condition). The kinematics were movement time (MT), maximum velocity (Vmax), deceleration time (DT), maximum aperture (Amax), time to maximum aperture (TAmax), aperture closure distance (ACD). The coordination of RTG were correlation coefficient (rmax) from cross correlation analysis between transport velocity and aperture size, and associated time lag (Tmax).
Results: In general, Vmax was not significantly different across conditions. The obstacle avoidance conditions were cause of increasing in MT, DT, TAmax, and Tmax and decreasing in Amax, ACD and rmax, when compare to those of non-obstacle conditions. There were significantly decreased Amax during RTG to small object in both obstacle and non-obstacle avoidance conditions. All measures for RTG coordination (rmax and Tmax) was significantly changed across object sizes only in obstacle avoidance condition.
Conclusions: These results indicate that the marked impairment in RTG kinematics and coordination of individuals with PD were revealed in the condition of RTG to large object with obstacle avoidance.
