Session Title: Parkinson's Disease: Non-Motor Symptoms
Session Time: 1:45pm-3:15pm
Location: Exhibit Hall C
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of malnutrition and to analyze influence of age, sex, disease duration and motor symptoms on its appearance.
Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients are at a higher risk of malnutrition. The prevalence has been estimated to 0-24%, while 3%-60% of PD patients are reported to be at risk of malnutrition. To date, there is no clear explanation for malnutrition in these patients.
Methods: The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was used to determine normal nutritional status; at risk of malnutrition; and already malnourished status. Demographic data, Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) parts III and IV, Hoehn and Yahr scale (H&Y scale) and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) were used to evaluate the factors affecting patient nutritional status.
Results: Out of 96 patients, 55,2% were at risk of malnutrition, while 8.3% had already been malnourished. We have found significant difference between age (p=0,041), H&Y scale (p=0,017), ‘off’ periods (p=0,027) and MNA. More patients with ‘off’ periods were rigor dominant and this difference was significant (p=0,027). UPDRS part III (rs=-0.367; p<0.001) and H&Y scale (rs=-0.330; p=0.001) correlate negatively with MNA.There was no differences in nutritional status in regard to sex and disease duration.
Conclusions: Factors affecting nutritional status are age, motor symptoms and stage severity, ‘off’ states and rigidity dominant type with ‘off’ states. Sex and disease duration do not appear to influence malnutrition.
