Objective: The authors supposed, restless legs syndrome . partly results from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, and further more, results in the sexual functional changes.
Background: Many observational studies showed that people with restless legs syndrome (RLS) had a higher risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, but results from those studies are inconsistent and mixed. The Jidong Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) Cohort Study is a prospective cohort study which was designed to mainly examine whether RLS was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease in Mainland China.
Method: The study included 8,917 healthy participants (52.2% male) with an age of older than 18 years (mean, 41years). Participants received a physical examination in the Staff Hospital, Jidong Oilfield Branch, China National Petroleum Corporation. Baseline data and blood samples were collected. RLS was assessed using the international RLS diagnostic criteria. The follow-up continues until December 2024, during which a prognostic model was constructed. The primary outcome was major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events and the secondary outcome was all-cause mortality, quality of life, cognitive impairment and depression.
Results: At baseline, mean age of the participants was 41.9±13.0 years. The prevalence of RLS in our sample was about 3% and was highest among participants with BMI between 24 to 27.9. People with RLS had a significantly shorter sleep duration (6.73±1.31 vs. 7.09±1.17 hours/day, P<0.001) and a lower percentage of higher education levels (77.43% vs. 83.53%, P<0.001) than people without RLS.
Conclusion: This study together with the designed prospective cohort will contribute to the scientific evidence on association between RLS and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular risks and will also be helpful to provide an unprecedented opportunity for early detection and prevention of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and other conditions
