Session Title: Parkinsonism, MSA, PSP (Secondary and Parkinsonism-Plus)
Session Time: 1:45pm-3:15pm
Location: Hall 3FG
Objective: To systematically assess the specific Non-motor symptoms in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy using the Non Motor Symptom assessment scale (NMSS).
Background: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is the 2nd most common neurodegenerative parkinsonism. Similar to Parkinson’s disease, non- motor symptoms (NMS) are known in PSP. However, there is scarcity of data describing the NMS profile in patients with PSP.
Methods: Fifty consecutive patients with probable and possible PSP were recruited prospectively for this study. PSP was diagnosed and classified according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (NINDS-SPSP) criteria. Motor severity was assessed using the UPDRS- part III and the PSP rating scale (PSP-RS) . Non motor symptoms were assessed using the Non Motor Symptom assessment scale(NMSS).
Results: This study included 50 subjects (37 males, 13 females) with a mean age of 61.36 ± 7.39 years with a mean duration of 2.89±2.40 years. The total NMSS score was 42.66 ± 34.79.The most prevalent NMS domains in PSP were sleep /fatigue (84%), sexual disturbances (75%) and gastrointestinal (60%). Significant correlation was observed between the total NMSS score and PSP-RS score (r=0.513, p<0.01). The PSP-RS score was also found to correlate with specific non- motor domains such as sleep/fatigue(r=0.444, p<0.01), mood/cognition (r=0.443,p<0.01), gastrointestinal (r=0.698, p<0.01) and attention/ memory (r=0.593,p<0.01).
Conclusions: Non-motor symptoms are prevalent in PSP and were present in all patients of PSP in this cohort. The most common NMS domains observed were sleep/fatigue, sexual dysfunction, and gastrointestinal dysfunction. An increasing severity of PSP was associated with an increase in NMS prevalence.
