Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate if interleukin 2 (IL-2) and interleukin 2 receptor alpha (IL2RA) genes are associated with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in Taiwan.
Background: Substantial evidence has suggested that intestinal inflammation and increased intestinal permeability (both possibly fueled by dysbiosis) may play roles in the multifactorial pathogenesis of PD. IL-2/IL-2RA signaling pathway, promoting proliferation and survival of activated T cells, has an essential role in the production of regulatory T cells. IL-2 plays an important role in chronic intestinal inflammation. Several genome-wide association studies have identified some SNPs of IL-2 and IL-2RA genes were associated with different autoimmune diseases or neuroinflammatory diseases including multiple sclerosis. However, the association of IL-2 and IL-2RA with PD has rarely been reported.
Method: We investigated whether IL-2 (rs2069762) and IL-2RA (rs2104286) are associated with PD risk.
Results: In total, 1020 subjects (509 patients with PD and 511 controls) and 985 individuals (488 patients with PD and 497 controls) were genotyped for rs2069762 and rs2104286, respectively. However, the results did not show any association of rs2069762 and rs2104286 with PD.
Conclusion: The relevance of IL-2 and IL-2RA gene on PD susceptibility warrants further investigation.
