Objective: To describe the relation between dysphagia and body mass index and the increase in anxiety and depression in patients with parkinson’s disease.

Background: Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disease that appears classically with motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor, and posture instability. Almost 24% of patients with PD have denutrition associated with increased energetic expenditure and dysphagia. More than 80 % of patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) develop dysphagia during the course of their disease. People living with Parkinson’s have 52-65% dyskinesia and rapid progression tends to be more in women.

Method: A longitudinal retrospective study was performed. A demographic and epidemiologic questionary where applied which determines gender, age, weight, size, and body mass index,  for the descriptive statistics. MDS UPDRS 2.3 was used to evaluate chewing and deglutition, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HRSD), and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HRSA). Group 1 patients with symptoms and group 2 without symptoms.

Results: 36 patients were included which 78 were men and 58 were women. The average age was 62 ±12.5 years old. Anova Test was used with a mean of 2.8 in the severe stage of the UPDR 2.3. A statistical cross table was used to compare both groups having (p=0.883). An additional Hamilton test was performed with a mean of 11.92.

Conclusion: The comparison between both groups didn’t show a significant difference between dysphagia and the body mass index nor depression or anxiety. The UPDRS 2.3 chewing and deglutition domain is not a specific tool to measure the impact of dysphagia.
