Session Title: Parkinson’s Disease: Clinical Trials, Pharmacology And Treatment
Session Time: 1:15pm-2:45pm
Location: Exhibit Hall C
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of FSS.
Background: Fatigue is a frequent, non-motor symptomhaving amajor impact on the performance of daily living activities in patients
with PD. The FSS is one of the most frequently used self-rating scales for fatigue, and it has been strongly recommended scales as
defined byMovement Disorders Society for rating screening and severity of fatigue in PD patients. The FSS consists of nine items and
the total score range from 1 to 7. Higher scores indicate a higher level of fatigue.
Methods: Seventy-five patients included the study. The clinical characteristics (stage of disease (Hoehn&Yahr staging),
disease duration, daily levodopa dose) and scores of rating scales including Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale,
Schwab&England (S&E) ADL Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), Epworth
Sleepiness Scale, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index, and FSS were recorded. The FSS was repeated 10-14 days following the first assessment.
Results: The mean Hoehn&Yahr stage was 2.16±1.07, the mean disease duration was 80.3±71.2 months, and the mean score
of FSS-total was 3.98±1.45. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was satisfactory (α=0.96), test-retest reliability was excellent (Spearman’s
Rho: 0.89-0.94). Convergent validity was investigated by determining the correlations between the total score of FSS and
scores of rating scales. The correlations ranged from fair (SF-36 MCS, Spearman’sRho: -0.23) to very good (SF-36 PCS, Spearman’s
Rho: -0.65).
Conclusions: The Turkish version of FSS is a valid and reliable tool to evaluate fatigue in patients with PD.
