Session Title: Parkinson’s Disease: Clinical Trials, Pharmacology And Treatment
Session Time: 1:15pm-2:45pm
Location: Exhibit Hall C
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of PFS.
Background: The PFS is a 16-item patient rated that was developed to assess the physical aspects of fatigue and to measure both
the presence of fatigue and its impact on daily function in PD patients. A total PFS score, the average item score across all 16 items,
ranges from 1 to 5. Higher score show a higher level of fatigue
Methods: We recruited 68 PD subjects into a prospective study. The clinical characteristics (stage of disease (Hoehn&Yahr
staging), disease duration, daily levodopa dose) and scores of rating scales including Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale,
Schwab&England ADL Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), Epworth
Sleepiness Scale, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index, Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), and PFS were recorded. The PFS was repeated 2 weeks
after the baseline assessment.
Results: Themean Hoehn&Yahr stage was 2.07±1.00, themean disease duration was 6.4±5.8 years, and themean total score of the
PFS was 3.2±1.1. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was satisfactory for clinical application (α=0.97). Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients
for test-retest reliability ranged from0.41 (item1) to 0.80 (item5). Convergent validity was tested by performing Spearman’s
correlation with other scales. Correlations were acceptable with values ranging from 0.29 (HADS-D) to -0.50 (SF-36 PCS). Also, there
is close relationship between the total scores of the PFS and FSS (Spearman’s rho: 0.64, p<0.001).
Conclusions: The Turkish version of PFS is a valid and reliable questionnaire to assess fatigue in PD patients.
