Session Title: Parkinson's disease: Pathophysiology

Objective: Idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (IPD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder. Most of the clinicians believe that it is limited with motor and cognitive disorders. However, latest studies with electrophysiological evaluation showed that peripheral polyneuropathy can be a finding in IPD but etiology of the neuropathy is not defined yet, both disease and medical therapy fort he disease blamed with causing neuropathy. In our study, we evaluated the effect of these drugs on peripheric nerves by grouping them into 3 groups, IPD patients using L-dopa, dopamine agonist, combined therapy (L-dopa and agonist). We excluded other reasons causing peripheral neuropathy.
Methods: In our study group, we had 60 IPD patients and 30 healthy control group subjects. We divided patients to the subgroups according to medical theraphy. We accepted the disease dominant extremity as dominant extremity. We compared nevre conduction study values of each groups. Kruksal Wallis test was used to compare continious data of more than two groups and to find out which group causes the significance Bonferoni correction applied to the results, also Mann Whitney U test was used in quartet groups with p value <0.008.
Results: We observed that in patients who are using L-dopa and dopamine agonist, dominant extremities had more effected NCS findings, also combined theraphy patients NCS findings were effected too but it was more homogenous.
Conclusions: We showed that in IPD peripheral nevre conductions were effected in favor of peripheral neuropathy and this impression is in dominant extremity in early stage of the disease, but later on there is a homogenous dispersion occurs.
