Session Title: Epidemiology
Session Time: 12:30pm-2:00pm
Location: Exhibit Hall located in Hall B, Level 2
Objective: To determine the prevalence of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Myotonic Dystrophy (MD) in the isolated people, where a study never been conducted before regarding the diseases.
Background: Although, a diagnosis of neurological disorders has improved in Mongolian recently, movement disorders remain unexplored and underdiagnosed in the nomadic population. Therefore, their management and treatment are left far behind the standard.
Methods: A population-based screening test is performed among 15,620 people of three rural areas in Khuvsgol province from June 2011 to March 2014.
Results: The prevalence of MD was 15.3 per 100.000 which is surprisingly high with 4.5 times of the national average. The other neurological condition as PD was also identified significantly high as 6.2 per 100.000. The mean age ± SD was 61.2 ± 4.1 years. In both conditions, a male dominated over a female with 4.2:2 ratio. 82% of individuals who diagnosed with a neurological disorder, never seen a doctor or any medical consults previously. Instead, 75% were seeking a help from a Shaman (who does spiritual guides and practitioners).
Conclusions: The dramatically high prevalence of MD and PD were determined among the isolated populations. It shows that more intensive management and upgraded diagnostic screening study should be performed further. Also, there are the greatest need of establishing a local clinic and access of neurological counseling.
