Session Title: Epidemiology
Session Time: 12:30pm-2:00pm
Location: Exhibit Hall located in Hall B, Level 2
Objective: To evaluate prevalence of nanometer symptoms in patients with Parkinson’s disease.
Background: While PD (Parkinson’s disease) is diagnosed on the basis of motor symptoms, comprising slowness of movement and complications with balance, it is known that NMS (non- motor symptoms) are highly prevalent and often amenable to therapy. In fact, studies have demonstrated that NMS of PD, such as sleep disturbances, anxiety, and depression as more disabling symptoms that deteriorate quality of life, rather than motor disability and as major explanations for admission to institutional care.
Methods: This observational cross-sectional study was performed prospectively using UPDRS, NMSQ, NMSS, MMSE and PDQ39. The observation recruited among June 2014 to June 2015. All the PD patients were consecutively recruited and satisfied the United Kingdom Parkinson’s disease Society Brain Bank Diagnostic Criteria. Cognitive abilities were investigated with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE).
Results: 81 PD patients with mean age of 62±12 years enrolled in this study, 74.1% of them are male. The most prevalent symptoms were constipation (65.5%), anxiety (60.6%)and sadness (55.6%)respectively.
Conclusions: Since NMS demonstrated as prevalent phenomena with a wide range of presentations, they should be considered as key findings in early diagnosis and treatment of PD.
