Session Title: Parkinson's disease: Non-motor symptoms
Session Time: 12:30pm-2:00pm
Location: Exhibit Hall located in Hall B, Level 2
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of parasacral electrostimulation in symptoms of lower urinary tract and constipation, besides the urodynamic parameters in patients with Parkinson’s disease.
Background: Parkinson is a degenerative neurological disease that leads to motor changes due to the reduction of dopamine neurotransmitters in nigraestriatal substance. Urinary disorders affects 37% to 70% and the constipation impacts 70 to 80% of all the patients with this disease. The parasacral electrostimulation is considered a safe treatment without side effects and reversible symptoms of lower urinary tract and constipation.
Methods: Patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease with LUTS. The participants completed the questionnaires of urological and bowel symptoms and were underwent to urodynamic study. All evaluations were performed before and after treatment and the technique used was the parasacral electrostimulation for twenty sessions for 20 consecutive days with 20 minutes each session duration.
Results: A total of 7 patients participated in the study. The results present a significant improvement in urinarysymptoms after the treatment with EP., with 71% of bowel continence and 86% of patients presenting type III Bristol stool Stool Score. Urodynamic parameters had an increase of maximum cystometric capacity at 57% of patients and reduce the residue in 60%.
Conclusions: The treatment with parasacral electrostimulation appears to be a technique that can improve LUTS and constipation in patients with Parkinson’s disease.
