Objective: To describe weekly changes in bradykinesia-score (BKS) measured on objective wearable data and assess the correlation between these changes and Quality of Life (QoL) of People with Parkinson`s disease (PwP)
Background: Objective measurements of bradykinesia in PD are crucial for accurate assessment and management of motor symptoms. Firstly, these measurements provide quantitative data, allowing healthcare professionals to track disease progression and tailor treatment strategies accordingly. To date, there have been no studies investigating the temporal distribution of changes associated with bradykinesia. Understanding this aspect could optimize data utilization, potentially enhancing the effectiveness of consultations.
Method: This study uses a longitudinal design to describe the weekly changes for BKS.
It is an extension study to the self-management project Empower-PD, where participants are educated and guided in integrating coping and mental strategies to manage everyday life with PD. In the Empower-PD project participants wear a wrist-worn accelerometer watch that measures bradykinesia and they are corresponding to questionnaire to determine their present QoL. The participants will be the cohort from the Empower-PD project, recruited from Movement disorders Clinics as well as from neurologists and physiotherapists in private practice in total 82, Hoehn & Yahr phase 1-3, were included.
Primary outcome: Changes in BK-scores from week to week during a 6-week period based on algorithm data from the wrist-worn watch.
Secondary outcome: Correlation between changes in BK-scores and scores in QoL (Parkinson`s disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39)
Results: Weekly changes in BK-scores among the participants will be displayed descriptively. The correlation between the positive and negative changes and the QoL score will be analyzed using linear regression analysis method. The results will be presented at MDS Congress Philadelphia, September 27-October 1, 2024
Conclusion: This study can provide estimates on threshold’s BK-values which potentially can be hypothesis-generating for further studies.
