Objective: to evaluate the quality of life of Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients with sleep disturbances.
Background: Sleep disturbances are one of the most frequent non motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Its affecting quality of life of PD patients.
Method: Cross-sectional study of 131 patients with Parkinson’s disease. Sleep dysfunction was screened with Parkinson’s Disease Sleep Scale-2 (PDSS-2), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire-39 (PDQ-39) was used to evaluate the quality of life of patients included in the study. The assessment of patients included demographics and motor status.
Results: PD patients identified as “bad sleepers” (according to cut-off score of PDSS-2 higher or equal to 18) presented statistically significant higher PDQ-39 total scores as well as higher scores for all the individual components of the PDQ-39 compared to PD patients that were “good sleepers”. There was a correlation between impairment in sleep quality (PSQI scores>10) and impairment in quality of life (higher PDQ-39 scores) (p≤0.001). PD patients with excessive daytime somnolence (EDS) presented with higher scores for all the individual components of the PDQ-39 scale, with statistical significance for the cognitive, activities of daily living (ADL) and mobility domains.
Conclusion: Sleep disturbances and poor quality of sleep have a negative impact on the health-related quality of life HQOL of PD patients.
