Background: Little is known about the prevalence, demographics, and spectrum of MD in Kazakhstan. In March 2018, Kazakhstan marked a milestone with the establishment of its first MD outpatient and inpatient clinic.
Method: We conducted a retrospective review of our outpatient clinics patient clinical records spanning over five years at our MD center. Comprehensive demographic and clinical data were collected.
Results: In the span of 5 years, our center provided care to a total of 1,940 patients with MD. The average age of patients was 62.2 ± 12.4 years, with 61.5% being females and 38.5% males. The majority of patients (67.9%) resided in urban areas, while 31.6% lived in rural settings. Of 1,940 patients 67.6% had only one visit to our clinic, while 32.4% have been followed-up and required readmissions. Clinical diagnoses of Parkinson’s disease was made in 55.31% patient, atypical parkinsonism in 10.57%, essential tremor in 6.39%, drug induced movement disorders in 0.88%, focal dystonia in 4.74%, functional movement disorders in 0.98%, generalized dystonia in 0.93%, normal pressure hydrocephalus in 0.36%, Wilson’s disease in 0.57%. Vascular causes of movement disorders (including parkinsonism and post stroke movement disorders) in 7.73%. More details shown in Table 1 and Figure 1.
Conclusion: The study offers valuable insights into the diverse spectrum, demographic profiles, and evolving trends of MD in Kazakhstan over the past five years.
