Category: Parkinson's Disease: Non-Motor Symptoms
Objective: To assess the association between non-motor symptoms and quality of life of people with Parkinson’s disease of different motor subtypes.
Background: Little is known about the impact of non-motor symptoms on the quality of life of people with Parkinson’s disease (PwPD) within 3 motor subtypes – tremor-dominant (TD), mixed (MX) and akinetic-rigid (AK).
Method: This cross-sectional study recruited a total of 267 PwPD. The quality of life was examined using the 39-item Parkinson’s disease Questionnaires (PDQ-39) and the non-motor symptoms were assessed with the Non-Motor Symptoms Scale (NMSS).
Results: Sixty-five PwPD were TD, 153 were MX and 49 were AK type. The overall PDQ-39 summary index (PDQSI) positively correlated with the total NMSS score (r=0.64, p value < 0.05). All 3 motor subtypes also had statistically significant correlation between PDQSI and NMSS (TD: r=0.66, p value < 0.05; MX: r=0.63, p value < 0.05; AR: r=0.64, p value < 0.05).
Conclusion: In conclusion, non-motor symptoms positively correlated with the quality of life of PwPD of all 3 motor subtypes.
