Category: Parkinsonism, Atypical: PSP, CBD
Objective: Aims: The goal of this retrospective study was to characterize a CBS, CBD and PSP cohort and demonstrate that the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) platform is effective at creating cohorts of patients for review of incidence, epidemiology, risk factors, and diagnostic criteria of various CBS phenotypic disorders which can help to better characterize accurate diagnosis, serve in designing future clinical studies and improve patient recruitment in clinical trials.
Background: CBS represents a rare neurodegenerative syndrome with different underlying pathologies that can be secondary to CBD and PSP among others.
Method: Methods: The EMR EPIC platform was used to identify a cohort of patients diagnosed with CBS, CBD and PSP from 2012 to 2022 in 2 groups, 2012-2017 and 2018-2022, at a Central New York Major Academic Medical Center. Microsoft Excel was used to compile the data for analysis.
Results: Results: Our cohort yielded diagnoses of PSP only in 99 patients (30 males and 34 females from 2012-2017, 19 males and 16 females from 2018-2022), CBD only in 23 patients ( 6 males and 3 females from 2012-2017, 7 males and 7 females from 2018-2022), combined CBD and PSP in 3 patients (2 males and 1 female in the period of 2018-2022) and 2 patients with diagnoses of combined CBS and PSP (both females in 2012-2017).
Conclusion: Conclusion: The data acquired from the EMR can be used to create a representative database. Our dataset indicates that incidence and correlation of CBD, CBS and PSP combination subsets agree with the reported literature and can be used in multicenter trials and research studies.
