Category: Parkinson's Disease: Cognitive functions
Objective: The objective of the following study was to verify the correlation between cognitive disorders
and REM sleep disorders.
Background: REM sleep disorder affect a large percentage of patients diagnosed with Parkinson's
disease and its effects on the cognitive level are not yet fully understood.
Method: A descriptive analysis was carried out taking as a sample patients diagnosed with Parkinson disease who have reported suffering from some type of parasomnia, older than 41 years, the total sample was 29 patients. The data analysis was carried out with the WINSTEPS program that based on the Raschmodel, which is an invariant analysis model.
Results: It was found that 50% presented memory alterations, 75% concentration problems and 44% in
other types of several cognitive processes. REM sleep disorders are associated with greater cognitive problems in the patients evaluated, both in Mini-Mental State Examination and in the patient´s own perception. Those patients who reported parasomnias should receive more specific medical attention in the detection of neurocognitive deficits and in the implementation of cognitive stimulation programs to manage the deficits and their consequences.
Conclusion: The high number of patients in the sample with cognitive disorders and complaints of
parasomnia is more than an indication that leaves no room for doubt about the relationship between REM sleep disorders and cognitive impairment. Patients with complaints of parasomnias should receive more specific medical attention both in the detection and screening of neurocognitive deficits, and in the subsequent implementation of cognitive stimulation programs to manage the deficits and their well-known consequences.
