Objective: To explore the involvement of GBA haplotypes in age at onset of Parkinson’s disease in the Asian population.
Background: GBA is an important risk gene for Parkinson’s disease (PD). Recently, intronic haplotypes in GBA were identified to be associated with age at onset (AAO) of PD. However, the conclusion was not consistent across studies.
Method: We examined whether previously identified haplotypes in GBA were associated with AAO of PD in 5,105 patients with array genotyping. Furthermore, in a cohort of 798 patients with whole-exome sequencing, we conducted haplotyping analysis to explore novel haplotypes in GBA associated with AAO of PD.
Results: No significant difference was observed in AAO between the two GBA haplotypes identified in previous study. We did not identify novel haplotypes associated with AAO of PD in our cohort.
Conclusion: Haplotypes in GBA do not determine AAO in the Asian population. Further well-designed studies are warranted to support the role of GBA haplotypes in AAO of PD.
