Objective: The purpose of our study was the early diagnosis of detection of Parkinson’s disease using biochemical markers.
Background: In recent years, due to the increase in the elderly population, there has been a steady increase in neurodegenerative diseases, which include Parkinson’s disease (PD). The prevalence of PD ranges from 150 to 350 people per 100,000 population. In the age group over 60 years, the prevalence is characterized by higher rates – from 1370 to 1600 per 100,000 population.
Method: In the early stages of the disease, we examined 321 patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The studies were carried out at the Republican Hematological Center. The patients were aged from 60 to 80 years: there were 156 men (48.6%), women – 165 (51.4%). 237 (74%) patients had motor dysfunction of varying severity.
Results: A decrease in the activity of the mitochondrial complex I was observed in 237 (74%) patients, which is detected not only in the substantia nigra, but also in platelets and skeletal muscle cells. At the age of 62 to 76 years. A marker of oxidative stress in the peripheral blood was detected in 84 (31.8%) patients, which served to increase the activity of the enzyme suproxide dismutase in erythrocytes, which is a natural antioxidant. At the age of 65-80 years. More often in women. Also, in PD, an increase in the level of glycine in 29 (40.43%) patients, and in 30 (59%) patients of glutamate and aspartate in blood plasma was detected, which is explained by the mechanisms of excitotoxicity involved in the process of neuronal degeneration.
Conclusion: In the next decade, we will be able to identify a range of additional studies that will have a sufficient level of evidence to recommend them to the list of necessary methods for diagnosing PD. These will be several biomarkers readily available for analysis.
