Category: Parkinson's Disease: Non-Motor Symptoms
Objective: To evaluate difference in prevalence of nonmotor symptoms and severity of autonomic and motor symptoms between patients with young (YOPD) and late onset (LOPD) Parkinson`s disease (PD).
Background: PD is not uniform and there is a heterogenosity in clinical presentation and prognosis. Patients can be divided in several subtypes and one of them is depending on age of PD onset.
Method: PD patients treated in Clinic for neurology in Osijek University Hospital Center were analysed. Data about gender, age, disease duration and age on symptoms onset were collected. Patients were divided according to age when first PD symptoms start on YOPD (symptoms began <50 year) and LOPD (symptoms began ≥50 year). To evaluate motor and nonmotor symptoms we have used Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale Part III (UPDRS III), Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson’s Disease – Autonomic Dysfunction (SCOPA-AUT), Non-Motor Symptoms Quest (NMSQ) and for disease stage we have used Hoehn and Yahr Scale (H&Y).
Results: Among 53 patients (20 female, 33 male), 19 (35,8 %) have YOPD, while 34 (64,2 %) have LOPD. There was no difference in between groups according to disease duration, disease stage nor gender distribution. YOPD patients reported more often problems with cardiovascular function (P = 0.007), daily sleepiness (P = 0.044) and REM behaviour disorders (P = 0.041). We haven’t found difference in severity of motor symptoms in between two groups.
Conclusion: Patients with YOPD more often have reported impairment in cardiovascular function, daily sleepiness and REM behaviour disorders.
