Objective: To describe the epidemiological profile in patients hospitalized with Parkinson’s Disease in Brazil during the years 2015 to 2020.
Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a complex illness and requires care, multiprofessional follow-up. Most of these patients need to be hospitalized at some point, either indirectly or directly related to the consequences of the disease, such as: falls, pneumonia, dementia, among others. And among one of the biggest problems related to these hospitalizations are associated with medication management and individual patient care. In Brazil, with an increasing average of people with PD, it is currently estimated that 200 thousand people are carriers, and thus it becomes necessary to know the real epidemiological situation in the country.
Method: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive study, conducted using secondary data available in the Hospital Information System of SUS (SIH/SUS) of the Department of Informatics (DATASUS) [2]. We considered all cases recorded from January 2015 to December 2020 in the public health system.
Results: In the whole country, during the five years (2020-2015), a total of 5,775 hospitalizations were observed with a cost of US$ 3,905,284.58 for the public coffers, corresponding to about US$ 676.24 for each patient. As for the length of stay, on average, patients stayed 13.7 days, with an increasing percentage around 16%, reaching its highest rate in 2020 with 15.6 days of hospitalization. The regions with the highest number were the Southeast 46% (2,660/5,775), followed by the South with 27% (1,576/5,775). The state of São Paulo had the highest number of aggravated with 25% (1,428/5,775). The mortality of PD in the country was 5.84 for each 1,000,000 inhabitants, of which 52% (175/337) were male, 41.5% (140/337) white, the age group with the highest occurrence 76.5% (258/337) were over 70 years old. The regions with the highest mortality rates were the Southeast, North and Northeast.
Conclusion: Given the analysis, although the hospitalizations for PD represented a small number of the total, it is of fundamental importance that professionals have knowledge about the peculiar management of these patients, since they have longer periods of hospitalization than other diseases recorded. And above all, an attention to the Southeast region, aiming to reduce the number of patients hospitalized for PD along with mortality rates.
