Objective: To identify clinical predictors of depression in Tomsk PwPD.
Background: Depression is often an under-recognized feature of Parkinson’s disease (PD). It is important to diagnose depression in Parkinson’s disease (DPD) as soon as possible and identify the predictors of depression to improve quality of life in patients with PD (PwPD) [Haewon Byeon 2020].
Method: 270 PwPD and 200 Healthy Control subjects were evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), HADS, MMSE, Apathy scale and other validated PD motor and non-motor symptom tools.
Results: It was found that the frequency of depression in PwPD is 58%, while in healthy patients – about 15%, p = 0.007. Moreover, the severity of depression was also more pronounced in PwPD (38% PwPD had severe depression, versus 15% among healthy patients, p<0.001). Advanced stage according to Hyun and Yar, high score on MDS-UPDRS, dyskinesia, chronic pain, decreased physical activity, constipation, sleep disorders, impulse control disorder, higher daily levodopa equivalent dose, amantadine usage showed associations with depression (p<0.05). During the study it was remarked that patients needing outside help were more likely to be depressed than those who worked and served themselves (p<0.05).
Conclusion: We confirmed that the frequency of depression is higher in PwPD compared to the control group without neurodegenerative diseases among Tomsk population. Depression negatively affects the life quality of PwPD. Our study also showed the connection between the severity of depression and the sociodemographic characteristics.
