Objective: To identity a correlation between serum indicators oxidative stress (uric acid, malondialdehyde and ceruloplasmin) and clinical symptoms in patients with ET.
Background: Essential tremor (ET) is the most common movement disorder, but its pathogenesis remains poorly understood. In recent years, there have been discussions about the neurodegenerative nature of ET. Oxidative stress is thought to be a major contributor to the neurodegeneration. Uric acid and ceruloplasmin are natural antioxidants, and malondialdehyde is the product of lipid oxidation.
Method: The study population consisted of 90 ET patients, aged 18 to 81 (22 male and 68 female). The severity of tremor was evaluated by the Fahn Tolosa Marin tremor rating score. Cognitive function was assessed using the Russian version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Affective symptoms were measured by Beck Depression Inventory. The control group consisted of 90 healthy individuals. All subjects signed informed consent for the study, which was approved by the Local Ethics Committee of the State Institute of Experimental Medicine. In the serum of patients with ET and the control group, the concentrations of uric acid (UA), malondialdehyde (MDA), ceruloplasmin (Cp) usage measured by colorimetric method. Statistical analysis was performed using STATISTICA 10.0.
Results: The levels of MDA and Cp in the ET group were (2.9 ± 0.1) μmol/l, (0.35 ±0,0) g/l respectively and was not different from the control group. The UA level in in the ET group also was not different from the control group – (324±9) μmol/l vs (329 ± 8) μmol/l respectively. However, when analyzing the relationship between the studied parameters and the clinical symptoms of ET, an inverse correlation was found between depression and uric acid content, R = -0.3 (p <0.01).
Conclusion: Decreased serum uric acid concentration in patients with ET may be a biomarker for the development of depression in ET.
