Category: Surgical Therapy: Parkinson's Disease
Objective: To report the real-world clinical outcomes of patients utilizing deep brain stimulation (DBS) to manage symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, and Essential tremor.
Background: Several studies have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for use in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, and Essential tremor. Retrospective studies provide a relatively quick means to obtain data on multiple clinical outcomes. As such, here we report the real-world clinical outcomes of patients utilizing deep brain stimulation (DBS) to manage symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, and Essential tremor.
Method: This retrospective, multi-center study will evaluate real-world clinical outcomes in patients implanted with a DBS system (Vercise, Boston Scientific) capable of multiple independent current source control (MICC) and/or in DBS eligible patients who are not currently implanted. Subjects’ charts that meet eligibility will have the pertinent information de-identified and data will be extracted using site-specific case report forms. If available, data will be collected at Baseline, the time of DBS system implant and post-procedure visits between the time of implant and that of data collection. Various measures of effectiveness over time may be analyzed depending on the data available.
Results: This report will present data related to motor outcomes, medication use, quality of life, and/or patients’ satisfaction as available, for all patients meeting inclusion criteria.
Conclusion: This study will complement existing real-world DBS clinical outcome datasets involving MICC-based DBS systems. As such, greater understanding of the current real-world usage and outcomes of a DBS system capable of fractionalizing stimulation current using a multiple-source mode of delivery (MICC) will help direct future DBS studies and the clinical application of MICC-based DBS systems to support continuing improvement in the quality of patient care.
