Category: Parkinson’s Disease: Clinical Trials
Objective: To evaluate changes in postural control following RT using static posturography and clinical functional balance tests in Parkinson’s Disease patients
Background: Muscle weakness affects postural control from the early stages of Parkinson´s Disease (PD). A possible way to evaluate postural control is by the static posturography. A quantitative measurement of the upright stance condition. The effect of Resistance Training (RT) and how such an intervention may contribute to the postural control is still under scrutiny.
Method: Seventy-four patients were randomized into a 3 months RT program with three treatment arms: resistance training with gym equipment (Gym); resistance training with free weights and elastic bands (FreeW); and a control group. Patients were evaluated at baseline, and at 3-month and 6-month follow-ups. As primary endpoint, we analyzed the changes in static posturography parameters in eyes open, eyes closed and dual task conditions. As secondary endpoints, we assessed balance by clinical scales, dynamic posturography and quality of life perception.
Results: There were no significant interactions in static posturography measures among groups, but improvements in UPDRS-III motor score was observed in both RT groups (p<0.05). The Gym group reported better quality of life for the mobility domain, while functional balance scales improvement was detected in FreeW group and maintained at the 6-month follow-up (p<0.05) See table 1.
Conclusion: This randomized controlled trial was not able to detect changes in static posturography parameters after 3 months RT program. Both intervention groups improved motor performance (UPDRS-III), but FreeW exercises provided positive medium-term effect on balance of PD patients.
