Objective: This study is to investigate the individual differences in musical and emotional experiences of PD patients and non-PD adults using the first Korean version of the Barcelona Music Reward Questionnaire.
Background: There has been a growing effort to study the effects of human musicality and rhythmicity-based interventions systematically and quantitatively to develop music therapy interventions for PD patients. Music-based interventions did not consider specific emotional and social disturbances of PD as well as individual psychophysical responses of music.
Method: The BMRQ was developed with psychological and neural bases of emotion and pleasure associated to music in healthy adults(23±8.3yrs,overall M1=49.98±10.01/ overall ∑ items M2=78.42±10.47): Musical Seeking, Emotion Evocation, Mood Regulation, Sensory-Motor, Social Reward and Music Reward. The Korean-BMRQ was administered through an online survey in community of PD patients(n=25/M=7,F=18/57.96±8.45yrs/duration 6.24±3.52yrs), and non-PD adults at public offices(n=25/M=9,F=16/46.76±9.72yrs/working 15.08±10.48yrs).
Results: The data was showed difference and lower values comparing the standard mean value (50±10)(current PD: before PD diagnosis: non-PD adults); all five factors and overall Music Reward (M1=45.64±12.58: 44.13±13.93: 44.04±11.67). In detail, each 20 items, five factors and total Music Reward(20-100 scores) showed difference and lower scores in current PD, before PD diagnosis, and non-PD adults;all five factors and overall Music Reward (M2=75.24±13.19: 73.56±15.11: 72.64±11.72). Specific items and factors in terms of the individual responses showed significantly positive or negative differences depends on age, career style, social culture and self-awareness (p <.05).
Conclusion: These results were indicated valuable implications in terms of the request of individual neuropsychological musical intervention for PD patients based on individual response than a group or general average outcomes due to consideration of the loss of rhythmicity and the state of alexithymia of individual PD symptoms. The further research of the individual psychophysical responses of music reward and emotion in people with PD will be developed with clinical information, cognitive and psychiatric symptoms considering the neural connectivity between auditory and musical reward sensitivity systems.
