Objective: To Evaluate the therapeutic and preventive effect of OnabotulinumtoxinA in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and chronic migraine (CM) in patients with bilateral hemifacial spasm (BHF).
Background: OnabotulinumtoxinA (BoNT/A) is effective to treat several movement disorders. Recent studies have suggested that BoNT/A is effective in pain syndromes.
Method: We conducted an open administration of OnabotulinumtoxinA in 4 patients with BHF, TN and CM. Patients reported medication use before and after intervention BoNT/A injections at 30, 90, 180 and 270 days. Improvement in hemifacial spasm, pain and ADLs were evaluated.
Results: All patients with trigeminal neuralgia, chronic migraine and impairment in activities of daily living had a substantial improvement in hemifacial spasm and pain reduction after OnabotulinumtoxinA (Table 1) (Table 2).
Conclusion: OnabotulinumtoxinA is effective in the treatment of an unusual combination of hemifacial spasm, trigeminal neuralgia and chronic migraine, improving hemifacial spasm and reducing pain in TN and CM.
