Background: Neurodegenerative diseases are the most common in the current scenario and most of the diseases results from the exposure of various environmental toxicants. Therefore, novel therapies for the suppression of neurodegeneration must be developed. Previously, reported suggest that heavy metals exposure resulted in neurobehavioral dysfunctions in male rats. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether rats exposed to copper results a higher degree of neurotoxicity. And neuroprotective and anti- the antioxidant activity of eugenol were also evaluated.
Method: Behavioral assessment, antioxidant enzyme activity evaluation and Immunohistochemistry.
Results: The results suggest that the rats intoxicated with Cu shows a significant reduction in TH (tyrosine hydroxylase) expression. The enzymatic parameters including Ache (Acetylcholinesterase), Catalase, Superoxide mutase and Glutathione peroxidase were also altered. The behavioral assessment and histological studies conclude the severe degeneration in substantia nigra compacta (SNc) and ventral tegmental area (VTA). Whereas, eugenol administration to Cu treated rats showed a evident protecting effect.
Conclusion: The current study have provide an experimental evidence of Cu intoxication induced alterations in brain and oxidative imbalance. On other hand, it also explain the neuroprotective and antioxidant potential of eugenol which can be used in heavy metals triggered neurodegeneration.
