Objective: Describing Clinical and etiological aspects of movement disorders in Mali
Background: Movement disorders (MD) correspond to a disturbance in the programming and / or execution of the movement. Although very it is very common in consultation in the Neurology department in Mali, MD remain little or no studied in our country
Method: Data were collected from the medical records of patients with movement disorders in an outpatient consultation for 5 years (January 2015 to December 2019) in the Neurology department of Teaching Hospital Gabriel Touré, Bamako.
Results: This preliminary study found a total of 247 patients with MD , including 147 men and 100 women, which represents 5.28% of the outpatient consultation. Tremor was the most common movement found in 72.1% of patients (including rest tremor in 43.7%, postural tremor in 17.8%, kinetic tremor in 4.9% and mixed in 38.5%), followed by chorea (5.3%), and dystonia (2.8%). The average age of the patients was 52.07 years and extremes ranging from 5 to 85 years. Parkinson’s disease was the most frequent diagnosis retained in 44 patients (17.8%), followed by essential tremor in 9.3% of patients, Huntington’s chorea in 2 patients and Sydenham chorea in 2 patients, however, no diagnosis could be established in 60.8% of the patients. The both cases of Huntington’s disease was confirmed by a neurogenetic study team in Mali. Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor were the most common causes because their diagnosis is purely clinical and requires no further examination. The high rate of undiagnosed patients is due on the one hand to the difficulty that practitioners have in characterizing these MD and on the other hand to limit of further exploration means. Mali does not have MD specialist
Conclusion: Despite advances in MD field, many African patients remain underdiagnosed due to the lack of specialists in the field and the lack of additional analyses
